What is a trench coat?
The trench coat is a military-style, double-breasted raincoat with a loose belt. While its origins date back prior to the First World War, that’s when the modern name for this style of coat popped up.
Battlefield trenches were wet, cold places to be but soldiers were already carting around a hell of a lot, including heavy clothing. So the trench coat was designed to be a better ventilated, lighter, and comfier jacket that kept them warm and the rain off. The jacket did all of this while managing to help them camouflage better.
While the trench coats of today vary from those you’d find on the battle-field, there are a few distinct features traits that many trench coats have, including:
- Being made of leather, poplin, or heavy-duty, waterproof gabardine drill
- Double-breasted, traditionally with 10 buttons but today it’s common to see six or eight buttons as well
- Raglan sleeves with cuff and shoulder straps
- Removable belt
Best trench coats for plus size women
While trench coats used to be worn by men alone because apparently only the male figure could pull them off, Hollywood changed that. With a little tailoring and a gorgeous starlet, the trench coat became an iconic look for women.
Featured prominently in films like A Woman of Affairs (worn by Gretta Garbo) and A Foreign Affair (worn by Marlene Dietrich), trench coats became a stylish and trendy piece of outerwear for women. Today, they’re a fall wardrobe staple.
But finding the best plus size trench coat can be a real chore. Not every coat that’s sized for bigger bodies is actually made with them in mind. So we’ve scoured our favorite brands and put together a list of the cutest picks for this season:
Editor’s Pick: Trench Raincoat by Lauren Ralph Lauren
For a sleek, sophisticated look we love this gorgeous jacket by Lauren Ralph Lauren. Made of cotton and polyester it puts a modern twist on the classic black trench coat with chic contrast piping.
This jacket ends around your mid-thigh, and features a front-button closure with belted button cuffs, side-seam pockets, and a removable belt. It’s a must-have piece for every fat fashionista, and is easy to take care of as it can be washed at home.

Pleated Trench by Jessica London
Those looking for an affordable coat that’s perfect for all your favorite looks should definitely check out Jessica London’s pleated trench. You can pair it with anything from a fashionable high-waisted skirt to a pair of jeans.
Made of poly, this trench coat is fully-lined and water-resistant. It provides a feminine silhouette with its princess seams, a tie waist, and inverted pleats. Reviewers say that they love the jacket’s color and material, but report that the sleeves may run small.
Essential Trench by Roman’s
With oversized front pockets, Roman’s plus size black trench coat is the perfect classic pick for the fashionista wanting versatility. With 46-inches of length, this coat made of a combination of cotton and poly rests mid-calf.
The jacket has a seamed waistline for definition with an added tie belt that matches the belted cuffs. Perfect for the rain, it’s water-resistant and features storm flaps. Wearers say that it’s a beautiful coat made of quality material that flatters full-figured bodies.

It rests around your knees and comes in two cute colours, rose and green. Featuring a tie-belt closure that helps give your waist a fashionable shape, a collared neckline for a collared look, double-breasted snap closure, and single-welt pocket that helps keep your things safe.
Solid Belted Double Breasted Trench Coat by Shein
If you have less than $40 in your pocket and have to add a plus size trench coat to your wardrobe this season (which we fully support), Shein’s double-breasted trench might be the perfect choice. It’s a plain, versatile coat that’s built for both spring and fall weather.
Made of 100 percent polyester, this jacket features a belt, pockets, double-breast closure, notch collar, and a lapel neckline with a knee-length hemline. Reviewers report that the material is soft, and it’s a great fall fit.

Single-breasted Trench by Tower London
Designed to hit just below the knee, Tower London’s classic coat is made of a combination of cotton and polyester. It has a slight shine for that freshly finished look, and the best news is it can be cleaned right in your washing machine.
Unlike most of the other choices on this list, this coat is single-breasted instead of double. It features a tie closure with matching button-tab cuffs, a water-resistant shell, and two pockets. Fit with a removable hood, this jacket is perfect for every weather, rain or shine!
Double Face Wool Coat by Marina Rinaldi
Considering its massive price tag, this Marina Rinaldi jacket isn’t for everyone. But if you have the extra cash, and you want a classic, high-quality jacket that should last a lifetime, this might be the perfect pick.
Made of double-face pure wool, its the perfect wardrobe addition for cold weather. With long sleeves, notched lapels, patch front pockets, and a self-belted waist this knee-length jacket creates a relaxed, chic silhouette.

It features a classic double-breasted build with notch lapels, shoulder epaulets, side pockets, and a belted waist. Wearers rave that it’s a versatile, high quality choice — one or two might have mentioned it’s the perfect plus size trench coat.
Croc Trench by Good American
This croc patterned trench coat by Good American is almost always sold out, so you might have to get on the waitlist if you want to add it to your wardrobe. It’s the perfect stylish and sexy conversation piece to add to your fall wardrobe.
While this coat is unique, it’s also versatile — from the boardroom to the dance floor, you can wear it with almost anything. The coat features a belted waist, slip pockets, and the fabric has just a bit of stretch. Wearers say that this coat is just right.
Paige Trench by 11 Honore
The Paige trench is a classic trench silhouette and a three-season piece that you will be able to wear for most of the year. The beautiful green shade will act as a neutral with your wardrobe. It is made from a medium stretch material that is 88% Tencel, 9% Cotton, 3% Spandex, and fully lined.
The coat’s construction features all that is expected from a trench; a classic notch collar and lapel, functional pockets. It also has double breast closure, seams for shaping waist, back vent, and an asymmetrical cuff with buttons. It is fitting classically through the body and runs a true fit.
Longline in Stone by ASOS
ASOS’s Logline plus-size trench coat is perfect on those days when the weather has a chill, but it’s not too cold. Made of a lightweight woven combination of polyester and cotton (which doesn’t stretch) this double-breasted design classic and cute.
Featuring a spread collar, button closure, tie waist, and functional pockets (hell, yeah), this jacket is a little bit longer than some of the other choices on the list. And, like we said, while it is lined with 100 percent polyester, you might want to avoid wearing it in a snowstorm!
What to wear with a trench coat
The versatility of the trench coat is what makes it the perfect go-to outerwear piece for the fall. It can be paired with almost anything, but I’ve picked out a few pieces we think you should definitely consider:
I LOVE tall boots.
They simply compliment any fall outfit from jeans to skirts and dresses. They’re classic and flattering, while still having an air of sex appeal. Plus you can wear them on both formal and informal occasions.
The Liz Claiborne boots we have pictured come in wide width, so they can give you a polished look (hopefully) without squishing your calf. I recommend wearing them with a pair of skinny jeans and a cute tee, throwing your trench over, and heading out on that hot date!
A cute umbrella
Trench coats are great for rainy climates because they’re typically water proof (or at least water resistant), which means that the perfect accessory to pair with them is obviously a cute-as-hell umbrella.
I have a love affair with Kate Spade so, naturally, I decided to feature this cute polka dotted one. But you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on an umbrella to make it count. You can look stylish and elegant carrying whatever you like!
