I love wearing a good, solid pair of leggings. If you find the right pair, they’re comfortable, shaping, and can go with almost any outfit.

But not all leggings are made equal, some serve a specific purpose, like compression leggings. Not only do they have body slimming features, but they can provide an assist when it comes to keeping the blood flowing in your body.

I’m a big fan of opting for a pair of plus size compression leggings when it comes to long flights. While you might not always physically feel the difference, a good pair of compression leggings can help keep foot swelling to a minimum—if you’re anything like me, this is especially important.

What are compression leggings?

Compression leggings are designed to help increase oxygen throughout your legs, and help keep that blood pumping. While they might seem like a gimmick, they are often recommended wearing during and after exercise, and after surgeries. They can also help during long period of sitting, like when you’re on a long-haul flight.

It’s not just leggings that are built with this compression technology, you can find socks, shorts, and even sleeves. Some research even suggests that these compression garments can help increase endurance, enhance performance, and speed up recovery during (and after) exercise.

How do I find the right compression leggings for me?

We all have different body shapes and comfort levels, but I’m a firm believer that there’s a legging out there for everyone. When it comes to picking the right compression leggings for you, you’ll want to consider:

  • Quality
  • Price
  • Style

Valuable information can also be found in customer reviews, especially when it comes to finding a bigger fit. Compression leggings come in all shapes, styles, and colors. Whether you’re looking for everyday wear, something to workout in, or need to dress them up, there’s something out there for you.

Right material

Compression leggings are most often made of breathable spandex. But the true magic is in the make from the different companies—you can definitely tell a quality from a crappy pair when you’re wearing them.

Some leggings are moisture-wicking material which means they dry faster. Others have more breathability, stretch, and even have better compression. I particularly like a plus size compression legging that has UPF built right in, bonus points if they’re made of recycled material.

Right fit

Beyond the material, the right pair of pants will fit just right—and you might need to goldilocks those bad boys.

The right fit for you might be a pair of high waisted leggings that cover your back when you bend over (hello, crack coverage!). Likewise, you might be most comfortable with a material that has a more amenable four-way stretch and sits a little looser on your legs.

Whatever you choose, you want something that makes you feel comfortable and confident.
